Metal detecting is a great hobby and it doesn't have to be expensive to get started. However one of the pieces of detecting gear that is not essential but certainly helps is a decent pinpointer. It is much easier to locate a small target in the hole with a pinpointer than doing it oldskool grabbing handfuls of dirt or sand and waving it in front of the coil.
The problem is, pinpointers can be incredibly expensive. They are, on the whole, very simple devices but, manufacturers, particularly the big brand name manufacturers have often seen the pinpointer market as a cash cow. They charge ludicrous amounts of money for something that costs peanuts to make.
Of course, the Chinese manufacturers are very aware of this and so they have created their own versions of these brand name pinpointers but at vastly reduced cost to the customer. The problem is of course, many of these Chinese pinpointers are mimmicking the look of the big brands but not the performance.
Is it worth spending the extra money for a big name brand, or is a cheaper Chinese made alternative the way to go? We reviewd the Sakobs GC2600 to find out.
