The DR.ÖTEK MT12 Metal Detector First Look

Our friend Chris Smith of #HADESDETECTING takes a look at the as yet unreleased DR.ÖTEK MT12.

This seems to be quite a departure for DR.ÖTEK. It is a more modern design than we have seen in the past and with some novel features such as being able to expand the width of the notch to take out more sections at once.

The coil is different from the ones we are used to from DR.ÖTEK. It has a more Minelab/Nokta look about it.

Overall it is an interesting looking machine. How well it does in what has become a very crowded marketplace is yet to be seen. And a lot depends on the price.

As mentioned, this is a pre-release version so there are always some things that are subject to change.

Just a quick update on the DR ÖTEK MT12.

Taking into account feedback from testers the handle is now being redesigned and no doubt there will be a few other improvements along the way. This has pushed the release date back a couple of months so it is likely it won't now be on sale before October.

Expected retail price is around the £150 mark although DR ÖTEK often offers discounts and special promotions so I would expect it to be closer to £100.00. This includes a digging tool, carry bag and wired headphones.

A little more info about the DR.ÖTEK MT12

• Operating frequency - 18kHz.

• Modes - All Metal, Discrimination, Notch, Beach, Pinpoint.

• Coil size - 8.5" x 11".

• Lengh - 87cm to 132cm (arm section is 30cm).

• Backlit display - Yes.

• Manual ground balance - Yes

• Target ID - 0 - 99

• Power - 2 x 9v batteries.

• Wired headphones supplied - Yes

• Digging tool and carry bag included.

That operating frequency of 18 kHz is particularly interesting for two reasons. First it may explain the poor performance of this machine on the wet salt sand. Beach mode does not help. But also 18 kHz is suspiciously close to that used in the Fisher F19 (19 kHz), Fisher Goldbug (19 kHz) and Teknetics G2+ (19 kHz). All of which have been cloned by the Chinese over the past few years.

The controls on the MT12 resemble those of the Fisher machines and the "ground grab" (ground balance) is exactly the same terminilogy and function used in the F19 and Gold Bug machines. Could it be that the firmware in the MT12 is the same as that used in the Fisher machines and the Chines clone machines such as the Tianxun TX-850?

Of course it could just be coincidence and the machines all use similar features etc
